Carrick Golf Club have reached the Connacht Shield Final for first time in 21 years, when Fiachra Neary’s charges beat Mulranny 4-1 in the Semi Final on Monday last Sept 25 2017. With three single matches around the Clew Bay links and two Foursomes at home, the task was a tall one as Mulranny had come through some tough matches in their Zone. But the three Carrick lads performed very well away from home winning two matches & halving one. First up was Alan Ffrench who was giving two shots to Eamonn Mongan, he put the pressure straight away on the Mulranny man by holing his third shot on the Par 5 first for eagle and 1 up and there after was never down in the match winning 3/2. Joey Casey was giving 5 shots to Eugene McCormac in the second match but was never in danger going 3 up through 6, four up through 14 & finished 2/1. Gordon Kavanagh was bringing up the rear, he was giving 6 shots to Christy O’Donnell, this was the tightest match of the three, Kav was trailing most of the front 9 but got his nose in front on the 12th and stayed ahead till the 16th where he was called in 2 up. The Foursomes matches at home saw David McDermott & Shane Kelly beat Ainsworth & Moylan while Padraig O’Dowd & Keith Duignan were called in on 16th level against Rothwell & JJ Kelly.
Onto the final V Athenry on Sat 7th Oct with the first leg in Athenry and return leg the following week Sat 14 Oct in Carrick.
Shane Kelly won his first Captains Prize in Carrick Golf Club & with it his first singles win in the club, he won top prize by half a shot over Padraig O’Dowd with 167.5 to O’Dowd’s 168, in a exciting final nine on Sun evening 6 Aug 2017.

Hoffman Wobbles Knocks Bruen From Top Of Leader Board
The top three from day one of Carrick Golf Clubs US Masters Challenge were replaced on the podium , by Mike Walsh -8, Turlough Bruen -5 & Jimmy Egan -4, ironically none of the three had the ill fated DJ on their selection. Walsh’s picks of Rory +1, Mickelson level, Spieth level, Rose -1, Fowler -4 & Sergio -4, good team & with Rory having possibly had his bad round it looks good for the Multyfarnaham man.
Zach Johnson Replaces Dustin in Carrick Golf Club Master Challenge
Dustin Johnson’s fall on Wednesday affected 252 entrants in Carrick Golf Club US Master’s Challenge, as he didn’t start the tournament everybody who had DJ on their team were allocated the next player down on the sheet, his namesake and a former Master Champion Zach Johnson is that player and after a first round of +5 he has some work to do to fill DJ’s expectation’s. Run away leader of the tournament proper Charlie Hoffman superb round of 7 under leaves him 4 ahead of his nearest challenger and Liam Bruen has the same margin over his nearest challenger in the Masters Challenge, he sits on top of the pile on -6 courtesy of his selection of Leishman +1, Kjeldsen level, Hoffman -7, Fowler +1, Chappell -1 and Casey level. only two others broke par in the challenge, but of course its only Thursday a lot of golf to be played.
