Junior Cup Qualifier
Another successful weekend for the club both playing & hosting inter club golf, on the hosting side despite what the Irish summer threw at us The Irish Junior Cup (handicap 5-9) North Connacht Qualifier held in Carrick Golf Club over last weekend July 9 – 10 went off without a hitch, 15 teams competed for two places in Connacht final on 5-7 Aug in Ballinrobe. Sat was stroke play qualifying with four scores from the five man team counting
Carrick Golf Club were leading qualifiers on 307 thanks to fine play from David McDermott 75, Nathan Flynn & Maurice Cullen 77 and Gordon Kavanagh 78, Sean Bohan’s score not needed. Other clubs to make the cut were Co Sligo, Westport, Ballyhaunis, Castle Dargan, Strandhill, Ballina & Castlebar. Sunday morning brought the match play element into the qualifying process Westport beat Ballyhaunis 3.5 -1.5 Castle Dargan beat Strandhill 4-1 and Castlebar beat Ballina 3-2. Unfortunately Carrick’s good play from Sat wasn’t repeated and we lost 3-2 to Co Sligo, John Coffey lost to Paddy Bird 6/4, David McDermott beat Paul Flaherty 4/3. Nathan Flynn lost to Kevin Dufficy 2/1 Maurice Cullen beat Karl Dolan 4/2 and Gordon Kavanagh lost to Declan O’Brien 2/1.
On Sunday afternoon Co Sligo beat Westport 4.5 – 0.5 and Castle Dargan beat Castlebar 4-1, so both Co Sligo & Castle Dargan go forward to Connach semi finals, good luck to both clubs.
Well done to GUI official Jim Mooney for his smooth running of the tournament, he was well supported by John O’Donohue, David Dent, Nicky McLoughlin, Fred Perry, Ger Golden & John Durkin.
