Great Win for Carrick in the Jack O Sullivan Zone Final !!!!

Yesterday Carrick men played Strandhill in the zone final of the Jack O Sullivan. This competition is played by 5 pairs in a fourball format.

The team selected by Captain Albert Hogg was:

Home:

David McDermott & Tommy Mulvey

Pat King & Nathan Flynn

Noel McDermott and Eamon McGirl

Away

Sean Bohan and Pat Gannon

Fiachra Neary & Paul O Brien

Carrick were hoping to make the home match advantage count but things turned out a little differently than expected.

Carrick got off to the perfect start with Pat King and Nathan Flynn putting in a very strong performance and winning their match in Carrick on the 14th (6 and 4). Carrick advantage was soon surrendered however as David Mc and Tommy Mulvey were defeated on the 15th at home.

The next point on the board went to Carrick as Fiachra and Paul recorded a great win in the 14th in Strandhill (6 and 4) Fiachra played some amazing golf in this match and was only 2 over gross on his own card for the 14 holes.

Then it was back to Carrick for the next point which Strandhill took with a win over Noel and Eamon on the 17th to leave the match all square with 2 points each.

At this stage if Carrick were going to win they needed to win the second of their away matches in Strandhill.  Sean Bohan and Pat Gannon started this match by loosing the first 3 holes. They managed to pull all square at the 8th hole. They halved each hole all the way to the 15th which Strandhill won. Carrick won the 16th with a great par by Pat Gannon. 17 and 18 were halved in Pars so it was onto extra holes.

Both Sean and Pat had longish putts to win 19 but neither dropped and the hole was halved in Pars. Holes 20 and 21 were also halved in Pars but as the extra holes wore on Pat Gannon seamed to get better and better. He hit an excellent drive on the 22nd and left himself a perfect wedge onto the elevated green. He lagged his 25 foot putt up to the hole and was given the 6 inch put to give Carrick the very valuable away point they needed to take the match.

Carrick are now into the Connacht semi-final in 2 weeks’ time where they will play Ougterard.

A number of talking points were raised after the game.

  • Pat Gannon played exactly double the amount of holes in Strandhill that he played the last day out for the club with Albert in the Point !!!!!!!
  • Will Shane Kelly get his place back on the team after his holidays ????? (history at the club is not in his favour !!!!!!!!)
  • Will Albert be able to drop himself 2 days in a row ?????
  • What will albert do with the Mc’s ??????????
  • Will Dark Cloud get any time of work or Kavanagh come back from holidays long enough to be considered ?????

All I know is albert you are doing a great job and you know who your friends are !!!!!

Well done to all !!!!
