Carrick Pull off dramatic victory in Connacht Shield.

On Monday evening last Carrick Men Played Co. Sligo Golf Club in the Connacht Shield. This competition is played with 5 pairs of foursome Matches (alternate shots). The difference between players handicaps in each pairing can be no greater than 8 shots.

The Carrick Team were as follows:

David McDermott & Noel McDermott.

Pat King & Paul O Brien.

Sean Bohan & Shane Kelly.

Eamon McGirl & Liam (William) Brune.

Albert Hogge & Pat Gannon.

Even though it was a home match for Carrick, team captain Fiachra Neary was expecting a very tough match. Not only are the Co Sligo teams always a tough opposition, but this time they were looking to win this competition outright 3 years in a row!!

There was heavy rain before the matches began but the weather brightened up considerably are the evening wore on. All the matches were extremely tight from the off (well nearly all of them)

The first points went on the board for Co Sligo when their pairing defeated David and Noel Mc. In Carrick on the 15th.  The second point also went to the Co Sligo Team when they defeated the pairing of Albert Hogge and Pat Gannon. I’m not too sure what hole it was on but I heard something about the 11th !!!!!!!.

Then Carrick got their first point on the Board with a great win away from home for Eamon McGirl and Liam Brune on the difficult 17th with a par. News of this point was a great boost for the 2 matches still on the course in Carrick.

The final 2 matches were very tight affairs and both required extra holes to separate them. First up was the pairing of Pat King and Paul O Brien. Pat & Paul lost both 16 & 17 to tee up on the 18th all square with their opponents. 18 was halved in Par’s. the Carrick pair held their nerve to Par the 19th to the Co Sligo pairs bogie to level the match at 2 points apiece.

Sean & Shane also lost the 17th to go down the 18th all square. Shane Kelly played two great shots on the hole one from the fairway bunker and the other a 6 foot pressure putt to par and halve the hole. Again the Carrick lads held their nerve to par the 19th one better than their opposites. To give Carrick the win 3-2.

After wards Fiachra who is captaining his first team for the club took all the credit for the win. Due to his selection and tactical skills.  He also said he has no problem wielding the Axe if needs be.

Well done Carrick !!!!!!!!!

Carrick now face Ballina in the next round on the 26th of July please come out and support the team if you can.
