PGA Tankard    

As in last weekends Open Championship on the Kent coast, there was only one winner in the PGA Tankard played in Open Championship weather conditions on Sunday last. Standing up to the driving wind and rain best was Bearach “Thursday” Doherty who finally got a win under his belt with a fine 37 points, like Darren Clarke Bearach had a good weekend, as he was part of the winning team in the Elphin GAA Golf Classic played on Saturday. Well done Bearach, that should give you bragging rights for a while

Fred Daly Plate Final

Members come out this Friday July 8 to support The Fred Daly Team in the first leg of the Connacht Final V Athlone at 1.30 tee off, 7 singles matches matchplay, the second leg will be in Athlone on Sunday also at 1.30. Representing the club are Dylan Beirne  Michael Egan Logue Kyle & Nathan Flynn Paul Lavin Jordan & Paddy Nally

Barber Rumble

The Michael Masterson sponsored Rumble called the Barber Cup held over last weekend was won by Frank McGrath Tommy Flynn & Johnny Martin with a great score of 88, 2nd place went to Eamon McGirl Austin & Gerard McDermott with 84, (oh the 14th !!) and 3rd on 83 John Crowe, Alan Ffrench & PJ Sharkey.

Inter Club Golf

A very busy week on the Inter Club scene, but not a very successful one except for the Jnr boys who play in a Connacht final next Friday July 8th & 10th having beaten Ballinrobe in Semi final last Sunday June 26th winning 5.5 – 1.5,  on Wednesday our Jack O’Sullivan went down to Co Sligo 3-2 loosing two away and one at home. Also on Wednesday the JB Carr trophy team were beaten again 3-2 by Roscommon, and then on Saturday the Junior Cup team failed to make the knockout stages, missing out by 6 strokes. Ballina eventually won beating the home team of Claremorris 3.5-1.5. This weeks action see the Senior Inter Club team take on Enniscrone in a zone final on Tuesday July 5th.

Lady Captain’s Prize to Gents

The latest round in the GOY took place last weekend with the staging of Lady Captain’s prize to gents, three of the senior Inter Club team performed best with Noel McDermott (9) shooting 62  (1 over gross) to win by one from Sean Gilmartin (19) 63 and John Moffatt (15) with 65 for 3rd. Joey Casey (12) won gross with 78. The categories went to Paul Lavin (9) cat 2 70,  Cat 3 to  Jim “Duval” McLoughlin (14) 66 and Cat 4 to Tom Martin (22) with 67. The 9’s were split with John Crowe (18) Front with 33 & Brian Oates (23) Back with 30.5.  Result online at www.carrickgolfclub.ie

This is a 3 man rumble, where one score count on holes 1-6, two scores on holes 7-12 and all 3 on holes 13-18. Play Saturday or Sunday with re-entry, on same team or different team. Senior Inter Club

Our seniors played Strokestown on Tuesday June 21st last in round 2 of the Seniors Inter Club, where we won 3 ½ – 1 ½  The Home teams of Albert Hogg & Tommy Aherne halved, Noel McDermott & PJ Sharkey won 4/3 Atty Hynes & Sean Murray won 8/7. Away Sean Gilmartin & Pat King lost 2 down and John Moffatt & Frank McGrath won 4/3. Next up Enniscrone in Zone Final on Tuesday next July 5th. We also had a victory in the Fred Daly Plate Connacht Semi Final against Ballinrobe winning the odd game in 7 by 4-3. The away team of Jordan Nally lost 2/1, Dylan Beirne lost 2/1 Paul Lavin won on 19th and Michael Egan Logue lost 3/2. The home team of Nathan Flynn won 3/2 Paddy Nally won 19th & Kyle Flynn won 4/3,  Final over two legs on Saturday July 9th & Sunday July 10th on Home & Away basis.

This Wednesday Inter Club action continues with round 2 of the Jack O’Sullivan V Co Sligo three matches at home. Then on Saturday next July 2nd we play in the Junior Cup qualifier in Claremorris, with top 4 teams qualifying for matchplay on Sunday.

Blue & White

Last weekend’s golf played over the blue & white course where competitors decided before play which course to tackle, 60% of the field chose the white sticks and with Rory mania in the air winning was in Milroy proportions with Eamon McGirl (20) shooting 44 points to win by 6 points from Niall McGreevy (19) 38 Padraig O’Dowd (12) took the Gross and Pat Conlisk (19) was 3rd with 36. On the blue course scoring was equally as impressive with Andy Connellan (21) winning with 43 points Owen Gibney (14) with 40 points was 2nd David McDermott (5) won gross and Adrian Beirne (13) was 3rd on 38. Sam Beag

Some small consolation  for the Leitrim Members after the hammering the footballers took in Pairc Sean on Sunday, the annual running of Sam Beag afforded the Leitrim Golfers some bragging rights when they won Sam Beag by 5 points, 524 to Roscommon 519. Top scorer was Frank McGrath (14) with 43 points, John Crowe (18) topped the Leitrim chart with 40, with the next 5 best scores all coming from Leitrim players including Dolores Mulvey who top the Ladies with 37 points. The Jones Oil Sponsored GOY on last weekend saw a reduction in scoring from the 40’s of the last few weeks down to a high of 39 due in no small part the strong wins on both Saturday & Sunday, best of the 39’s was Captain Pat King (11) with a back 9 of 20 to pip Des Beirne (9) also 39 and David McDermott (6) with 39 3 over and that with a bogey bogey finish but had the consolation of Gross, Sean Bohan took 3rd spot with 38. The Categories were divided by Cat 2 Padraig O’Dowd (12) 35, Cat 3 Pat Conlisk (19) 36 and Cat 4 Joe Bruen (21) 33, the 9’s went to Fiachra Neary (17) 19 and Back Keith Duignan (16) also 19Full result online at www.carrickgolfclub.ie

Last Saturday afternoon we were beaten by Co Sligo in The Pierce Purcell shield, loosing 3.5 – 1.5. Loosing 2 matches at home and one away. The Home teams of Padraig O’Dowd & Jim McLoughlin lost, PJ Sharkey & Niall Roche lost and Fiachra Neary & Niall Loftus halved, Away Chris Lowe & Alan Loftus lost and Daragh Loftus & Michael Nolan won.

The Holmpatrick Cup, which we re christened last year to The Sharkey Cup based on Noel & Jack’s record in the competition and they almost won again only to be pipped by Colm & Daragh Loftus who had 41 points to the Shark’s 40. Last Sunday week we progressed to the zone semi final of the Fred Daly plate with a 4-3 win over Westport, winning 2 at home and two away, the home team of Jordan Nally (8) won 3/2 Dylan Beirne (9) lost 2/1 Paul Lavin (9) won 3/2 and Michael Egan Logue (13) lost 3/2. Away Nathan Flynn (13) won 2/1 Ben Donohue lost 3/2 and Kyle Flynn won 2/1, we now play Ballinrobe in June.

Inter Club action this week is in Pierce Purcell Shield with a home tie v Co Sligo on Sat next May 28 at 2.30.

Gilmartin Trophy GOY

The Gilmartin Trophy played in persistent drizzly rain on Sunday last May 15th, but that didn’t prevent 40 points being the mark for a podium place, with Hugh Bracken’s (20) 41 points taking top spot, Seamus Sweeney (20) was 2nd on 40 B9 and Eamonn McGirl (21) 3rd also on 40, Albert Hogg (8) won the Gross with 31. The Categories went to Noel Sharkey (9) 35 for Cat 2, Sean Gilmartin (19) 39 Cat 3 and Fran Tyrrell (26) with 38 won Cat 4. The 9’s were divided by Jim “Duval” McLoughlin (14) 21 for Front and Des Beirne (9) also 21 for Back. Full result online at www.carrickgolfclub.ie

Murphy Cup

The Murphy Cup, organised in Memory of Damien Murphy and in aid of  North West Palliative Care had its first running on last weekend over Saturday & Sunday with an Open stableford competition. The event was very well supported by members & visitors with a few hackers thrown in for good measure and resulted in over €2k collected for this worthy cause. Great credit is due to Murph’s good friend Owen Gibney who organised the event and was assisted in sponsorship from Murtagh’s Bar, Esquire and Western Optical. Michael Gallagher (23) now 20, walked away with top prize courtesy of 44 points, next on 41 Des Beirne (10) Albert Hogg (9) picked up gross and PJ Sharkey (17) was 3rd on 40. The categories went to Pat King (11) Cat 2 with 36, Cat 3 John Crowe (19) 38 and Cat 4 Leo Kavanagh (25) 37, Front & Back 9 was shared by Tom Martin (22) 21 and Padraig O’Dowd (13) back with 22. Best dressed went to Collie “John Daly” Griffin, he wasn’t quiet the width but none the less he looked the part, his prize was sponsored by Gerard Anthony. Now that the Golf Season is in full swing our attention will be focused on our Annual Golf Classic which takes place over June Bank Holiday weekend. June 3 – 6. Cryans Hotel Stableford

We had a unique situation on Sunday May 1st last with the first running of the Cryans Hotel sponsored stableford, the uniqueness of it was Members had a choice of which tee they played off, and surprisingly the majority chose to play off the blue course, scoring was below the last few weeks, probably because of no placing and also a strong wind. The winner on the blue course was Collie Griffin (18) with 40 points, he beat Alan Ffrench (11) on 38 and Gordon Kavanagh (9) took Gross with 28, Johnny Martin (11) was 3rd with 37. On the white course Seamus Sweeney (21) with 38 took top spot, Tom Daly (18) with 37 was 2nd Gross went to Brendan Boyle (14) and 3rd Joe Bruen (21) also 37. Cox’s Pharmacy Junior & Intermediate Scratch Cups

On Monday May 2nd we had another 2 course competition with the Cox’s Pharmacy Jnr & Intermediate Scratch cups Stroke, winner of the Jnr Scratch cup was John Grogan (6) Malahide Golf Club with 80, Matt Farrell (7) with 84 and David McDermott (6) 3rd also 84. The Net prize went to Johnny Martin (10) with 75. In the Cox’s Intermediate Scratch Cup Jim “Duval” McLoughlin (16) was top with 79 2nd 81 John Coffey (10) 3rd Michael Egan Logue (15) also 81, the net prize went to Pat Conlisk (19) with 69.

Last Sunday’s Mixed 4Some, The Joan O’Shea sponsored by Gus O’Shea was won by Drumshanbo husband & wife Tommy & Dolores Mulvey with a great score of 47 points, 2nd on 42 Tommie & Teresa Kenoy & 3rd Johnny Martin & Madame President Molly Daly also with 42.

May Bank Holiday Weekend

Next Sunday May 1st we have the first of a Blue / White competition, where player’s can decide which course they wish to play on. This competition is Stableford and is sponsored by Cryans Hotel Carrick. On Monday we have the Junior & Intermediate Scratch Cups Open. Sponsored by Cox’s Pharmacy Carrick. King & Moffatt Stableford

Last weekend we had the second GOY of the year with the King & Moffatt sponsored Stableford. The club would like to thank Pat King, and John Moffatt for their continued Sponsorship and support. Another big field for this GOY event saw the scoring of last week maintained with 42 the mark for top spot, 3 players managed that, but Adrian Roche (21) had the best pipping Tommy Mulvey (11) into 2nd place with the third 42 going to Albert Hogg (9) he picked up the gross with 31. Owen Caulfield (24) was 3rd with 41. The categories went to Sean Bohan (10) 41 for Cat 2 (5-12), Aiden Sheerin (18) Cat 3 (13-20) with 39 and the Cat 4 (21-28) went to Tom Martin (22) with 40. The 9’s were shared by Front Kieran Oates (24) 25 points, Back Des Beirne (10) 21 Winners of birdies for Cottage Jamestown Sford on Sunday April 10thwent to Albert Hogg & Sean McMonagle. The Friday 14 hole was won by the man on fire at the moment Sean Bohan with 30 points. In the Masters sweep we had for this years tournament, John “Jimenez” McCarthy took top prize, 2nd Noel McDermott & Adrian Roche.

Easter Weekend

Next Saturday April 23rd we have a 4Some competition, on Sunday the Joan O’Shea Mixed 4Somes takes place, and on Monday April 25th we have an Open Stableford, this will be the first Open Day of our Monday to Thursday Open Days, which will run until end of September.

The Cottage Jamestown Stableford

Last weekend we had the first GOY of the year with also the first running of the Cottage Jamestown sponsored Stableford. The club would like to welcome and thank Sham for his Sponsorship. A big field for this first GOY event saw Competition Secretary Sean Bohan (10) take top spot with 43 points, he pipped Tommy Flynn (11) who had 42 B9, Stephen Sheeran (18) was 3rd also with 42. Sean Murray (10) won the Gross. Dylan Beirne (9) won Cat 2 with 40, Michael Egan Logue (15) Cat 3 with 40 & Gerry Beirne (22) Cat 4 with 39. The 9’s were divided by Front James Connors (20) with 23 and Back Gerard McDermott (23) also with 23. The Birdies for previous competition went to Johnny Martin & Jordan Nally. Winners of birdies for Cottage Jamestown Sford will be announced next week.

 

King & Moffatt GOY

Next Sunday April 17 we have the 2nd GOY in The King & Moffatt Stableford Book online.

 

Pierce Purcell

The first practice session for this years Pierce Purcell took place last Friday evening, there will be a practice sessions every Friday evening up until the home match V Co Sligo on May 28. Next session Friday April 15 at 6pm where we will play in the Friday 14 hole competition. Winner of last Fridays 14 hole Brian Oates with 32 points.

On Easter Saturday April 24th the Club are holding a Fundraising Social in the Bush Hotel. Tickets are now on Sale at €20 and are available from any Committee Member.
