Tommy Aherne Lynch Cup Winner for 2009

Tommy Aherne picked up his second Dunnes / Swan Lynch Cup on Sunday last Oct 18 when he beat John McGuinn 1up in a tight final. Giving 1 shot to McGuinn in the singles match play tournament final it was always going to go to the wire and so it proved, trailing 3 down on the 12th tee Aherne reduced the deficit with par on 12 & 13, holes 14 & 15 were halved in par to leave McGuinn 1 up with 3 to play, a raker of a putt by Aherne on 16 for par and win left the match level with two to play another Aherne par on 17 put him one up and when McGuinn drove out of town on 18 it looked curtains, but there was a small twist before hand shakes, John's 3 off the tee ended up in the fairway bunker his next shot was stuck to gimmie which asked Aherne a question or two, who was short in two, he bladed his chip through the green in 3 but managed a great up and down for 5 to earn a half and the match 1 up. Well done Tommy on being the top man out of the 113 entrants to this years Dunnes / Swan Lynch Cup. To Dunnes / Swan thank you for your continued support for the Lynch Cup.

Club Match Play's down to the wire

The Lynch Cup is down to the last 4, with Tommy Aherne playing Noel Sharkey in one semi final and John McGuinn V Chris Lowe in the other semi final. The final of the Club 4Some took place last weekend between Jimmy Bruen men Noel & Jack Sharkey against Paul Lavin and Michael Egan Logue. With the benefit of 6 shots the young guns brought the experienced father and son pairing all the way to the 18 only to loose 1 down. Unfortunately the young pretenders could not cap a good year off with a victory, between them they have lost 17 shots this year, but the experience of both Noel and Jack was a bridge too far. Well done to them on reaching the final and congratulations to both Noel & Jack. The club 4Ball is also down to the last 2, after Keith Duignan & Sean Bohan dispatched the Crowe boys John & Barry 2up on Saturday last, they now play father and son pairing Colm & Dara Loftus in the final.

Tommy Mulvey is Golfer of the Year after tight finish

Tommy Mulvey picked up his first Golfer of the Year title last Sunday Sept 27, thanks in no small part to his level par back 9 for a 68 and 8 Golfer of the Year points. Lying third going into last Sunday's competition two points behind Sean Bohan & John McGuinn, Tommy needed to be in the top 3 or 4 and hope the boys would slip up, both duly obliged, a double bogey on 14 and a bogey bogey finish for 69 for Bohan meant he only picked up 2 GOY points to finish on 39 John McGuinn had 37 points going into Sunday's final round and still involved in the Lynch Cup where he could pick up another 4 points, but he finished outside the top 10 (thanks to an eight on the 13th) with 71 for no GOY points leaving him on 37 points. Jimmy Bruen team go down to Waterford

Our Jimmy Bruen exploits for 2009 ended on Friday last Sept 18 in Tullamore in the All Ireland semi final when we were beaten by Waterford Golf Club 3.5-1.5 winning only 1 game. That came in the 3rd match out Noel Sharkey & Jason Loftus winning 5/4 over Mark Daly & Eanna Griffin. Our first match out Albert Hogg & Jack Sharkey got off to a bad start against Anthony Aherne & Colin Lynch and were 4 down through 9 a mini fight back on the back 9 left them with 2 down with 3 to play but a 3 putt on 16 sealed their fate. Sean Bohan & Colm Loftus had a tight match against Anthony Mulhall & John Power all the way through with never more than a hole in it either way, however a missed putt on the 15th would have leveled the match again, Carrick did manage to level on 16 after a glorious approach by Bohan but a poor chip on 17 handed the advantage back to Waterford and they finished off the game with par and win on the 18th. Des Beirne & Gordon Kavanagh had a steady start against Anthony Feicks & Francis Power but lost 3 holes on the spin around the turn and were playing catch up they then 3 putted the 16 to loose 3/2. The bottom match of Noel McDermott & Tommy Mulvey against Andy Ryan & Martin Freeman ended all square and kept McDermott & Mulvey's unbeaten record all season in tact. In the other semi final Nenagh beat Foyle 3-2 with deciding match going to the 21st. Nenagh won it out beating Waterford 4-1 in the final on Saturday. Well done to our boys on reaching the finals to a man they were disappointed that they didnt perform to their potential on the day but the experienced gained will stand for future campaigns. Carrick beat Athenry 3-2

Carrick Golf Club are Connacht Jimmy Bruen Shield winners for the 2nd time in 4 years after a dramatic victory over Galway Club Athenry on Sunday last Aug 9 in Oughterard Golf Club. The Jimmy Bruen Shield was the last of 5 Provincial Finals of the weekend with Galway Clubs successful in the other 4. Standing at 2-2 with the last team of Noel McDermott & Tommy Mulvey all square going down the last it looked like the Galway Clubs were going to have a clean sweep but a poor approach by Peter Dolan for Athenry let our boys back in and they halved in 5. This brought extra holes of which the 19th was halved in fives. Normal Farrell’s drive for Athenry down the 20th ended up in the semi rough, Tommy Mulvey’s response was a monstrous drive of over 300 yards onto the fairway, Peter Dolan’s approach came up short, Noel McDermott with copper wedge in hand left it to 5 foot, Athenry failed to get up and down so we had two for the win which we duly took to secure a famous win. Carrick got all matches off to a good start early on but Athenry clawed them back and through the middle of the rounds all matches were tight with the exception of Des Beirne & Gordon Kavanagh who were 3 up through 9, 5up through 12 and closed out the game on 14 with birdie for a 6/4 win over Niall MacSweeney & Bob Reilly. Athenry pulled level with Ronan Coffey & Sean Glynn beating Albert Hogg & Jack Sharkey 4/3. Carrick got their noses in front again when Sean Bohan & Colm Loftus won 2/1 on 17 beating Jim Joyce and Pierce Scully, Bohan sinking a 20ft birdie putt for victory. This left 2 matches alive Noel Sharkey & Jason Loftus playing Martin Forde & Brian Scully who were having a titanic battle with never more than a hole in it, Carrick went one down on 15 but pulled it back on 16 only to loose 17 to go down the last 1 down Athenry’s drive split the fairway with Carrick in the semi rough, but Brian Scully’s  7 iron failed to make the dance floor and his partner Martin Forde duffed chip gave Carrick a chance to force extra holes, Noel Sharkey’s putt for a win lipped out and the hole was halved leaving the tie level at 2-2 and set for dramatic finish. The All Ireland semi finals take place in Tullamore Golf Club on Friday Sept 18th V Waterford Golf Club.

Large turnout for

"Sam Beag"

On Sunday May 24 the first running of "Sam Beag" saw a large turnout of Members compete for the perpetual Trophy sponsored by Tommie & Teresa Kenoy. The format was Ladies & Gents single stableford with Members competing for either Leitrim or Roscommon which brought the usual banter that any clash between the two counties creates. Overall it was a fun day played in dry conditions which everybody enjoyed, well done to all who participated and in particular to Tommie & Teresa for the idea and trophy.
