Cecil Ewing Team beaten on Final Green

The Carrick Cecil Ewing Team who were narrowly defeated by Athenry in the 2nd Leg of the Connacht Final in Carrick last Saturday September 22nd Back Row L/R Declan Loftus, Tom Beirne, Mickey Foley, Anthony Noone, Michael McGovern, Denis Flynn, Jim Newcombe, Padraic MacShera. Front Row L/R Oliver Curran, Donal Hanly, Pat Conlisk, John McCarthy Club Captain, Jim King Cecil Ewing Captain, Niall Roche Michael Duignan.
The Cecil Ewing Team failed to force a play off by the narrowest of margins in a wind swept Carrick Golf Club on Saturday last, Tom Beirne & Padraic MacShera were level playing the last, but an unbelievable up and down by Richard Lyons & Brendan O Connell followed by a 3 putt by the Carrick lads meant Athenry took the title by 6 games to 4 overall. That finish was in contrast to the start the Carrick team had, up in all but one match through the turn winning the first two matches by 5/4 and 8/7 respectively. But like every Golf competition it really begins on the back 9, Athenry with probably the more experience players edged back into the game and won the last 3 matches on 16, 17 and the crucial one on the 18th. Hard luck to our lads and to Captain Jim King on a great campaign its a great achievement to reach the final and with all the team (at this stage anyway) eligible for next year the experience gained this year will prove invaluable. Tuam take Jimmy Bruen Title
Our attempt to capture a second Jimmy Bruen title in as many years did not materialize on Sunday last in Rossespoint, we were well beaten by Tuam 4-1, yet through 9 holes we seemed to be in control, up in 3 matches, level in 1 and down in one, but were unable to keep the momentum going and capitulated on the inward 9. Our 1st match out was Albert Hogg & Sean Bohan, they had a poor start going 2 down tru 3 holes , but pars on 5 and 8 brought them level another on 9 put them 1 up and then a couple of 3 putts allowed Tuam back into it and they pulled away to win on 16 3/2. Noel McDermott & Tommy Mulvey had a good start, but a short putt missed on 4 upset their rhythm, but they stilled turned 1up, confusion on the 10th meant a 1 shot penalty which lost them the hole they then lost 11 and never recovered, finishing on the 16th 3/2. Colm Loftus & Noel Sharkey were never down in their match, a bizzare half on the 4th kept them 1 up where they remained until the 14th which they lost, then lost the 15th to go back level a par on 16 put them 1 up where they remained until called in on 18, when result was known. Sean Mulvey & Damien Murphy just had a bad day, bad start which didnt improve, were 5 down through 9 holes, but still managed to go to the 14th loosing 5/4. Des Beirne & Sean Murray had an up and down day, 2 up through 5 holes, lost 6,7 and 8, to go 1 down won 9, then lost 10 11 and 13, & 14 to go 4 down when they were called in on 15th fairway. Commiserations to Captain Donal Neary and the team, great performance to make the final, good luck to Tuam in Shandon Park in September

Jimmy Bruen Team through to Connacht Final
Our Jimmy Bruen Team are into the Connacht Final for the 2nd time in as many years after a emphatic Semi Final win over Ballinrobe on Monday last July 9th. With 3 matches away, Ballinrobe were in the driving seat to progress to the Final, but this team enjoys playing away having won all but one of their matches away in the competition this season. Monday was no exception with the score of 4 1/2 - 1/2 and Ballinrobe's half was a generous one, needing to hole a 15ft putt for half on the last Green Captain Tom Conlisk stepped in to claim the half. So now it's another Connacht Final in Co Sligo on Sunday August 19th V Tuam Golf Club, who defeated Portumna in the other Semi Final 3-2. So good luck to Captain Donal Neary and the team this Sunday August 19th
