Coaching programme held in
Carrick Golf Club

The Group of Girls who took part in the 6 week coaching at Carrick Golf Club with their coach David Byrne, also in photo Siobhan Talbot - Junior Convenor Carrick on Shannon G.C and Tracy Farrell - Jnr. Convenor Co. Longford G.C.
An ILGU programme which was run nationally over six saturdays and was aimed at girls who are interested in progressing their golf game. Each session lasted two hours and dealt with everything from the basic grip to chipping & putting. Carrick on Shannon was a fantastic venue as it has a covered driving range with bays and ample short game practice facilities. The group were lucky enough to be allowed out on the course for further tuition with the professional. Everyone made great progress over the six weeks and will hopefully continue with practice throughout the winter months so as to be ready for the start of the golfing season next year.

David Byrne shows the girls the art of chipping.

Birdie birdie finish clinches 4Ball final
From zero to heroes David McDermott & Fiachra Neary who finished last in the qualifying stages of the club 4Ball took top spot in a very tight and competitive final played on Sunday Nov 16th, they pipped Joey Casey & Tom Beirne with birdie on the 18th to take this years Club 4Ball Championship. As David McDermott was the low man off 5 both Tom Beirne and Fiachra Neary were receiving 9 & 10 shots respectively, this kept the game tight with both sides using their shots effectively. Up to the 11th hole it was nip and tuck with the match level Tom Beirne who was playing well and putting like God won it with par, the 12th was halved in bogey and Beirne struck again on 13 with par for nett birdie and a win to putt his side 2 up, but a quick response by McDermott on 14 with birdie dragged one back, the 15th was halved in par and a Neary nett par on 16 squared the match. 17 was halved in birdie by Beirne & McDermott and another McDermott birdie on 18 claimed the title. Noel Mc is
Golfer of Year

L/R Competition Secretary Sean Bohan presents Noel McDermott with the Golfer of the Year trophy
Going into the last Competition of this years GOY 4 players had a mathematical chance of catching Noel McDermott but it depended on a lot of "if & but's" needless to say neither the if's or but's showed up and Noel claimed the title, even though he did not win any of The GOY competitions he picked up points in 6 out of the 10 competitions that make up the GOY. So well done to Noel who can pick up another 4 points if he wins the Dunnes / Swan Lynch Cup final. Final standing in GOY

L/R Tom Cronin of Dunnes / Swan Bar Carrick Sponsors of the Lynch Cup presents Sean Bohan with his prize on Sun Nov 9th
The Dunnes / Swan sponsored Lynch Cup Final was played on Sunday Nov 2nd Sean Bohan captured his 3rd Lynch Cup and his second against Noel McDermott by winning 3/2 in an epic final. With the first hole halved in par, Noel Mc took an early advantage with par on the 2nd but Bohan’s par on 3 leveled again only to hand back the lead on the 4th loosing it to par, to put Mc back 1up. Holes 5, 6, and 7 were halved in par and McDermott’s drive on 8 to 10 feet saw him take a 2 hole advantage, but Bohan quickly replied with par and a shot on 9, to leave Noel 1 up tru 9. Bohan then leveled the match on 10 with an approach to 15 feet, 11 is halved in par, a Bohan par on 12 puts him 1up for the first time in the match and as always the 13th becomes the turning point, both players were in trouble off the tee, but Bohan looked like he had the comfort of 2 putts from 8ft for win until McDermott sinks a long putt for 5 but the 2 time winner followed him in for 4 to go 2up. Shaved birdie putts on 14 still leaves Noel Mc trailing by 2 and his bogie on 15 sees him 3 down with 3 to play. A poor tee shot on 16 by Bohan meant he couldn’t make the green in 2 but McDermott’s approach misses left and he failed to get up and down to half the hole in 5 and concede the match, so a cracking final with the younger man claiming the title on the back 9. Well done to both players and particularly Sean on claiming his 3rd Lynch Cup.

Moffatt claims McGarry Trophy

L/R David McGarry presents 2008 McGarry Trophy Winner Johnny Moffatt with his prize.
Johnny Moffatt claimed the 20th anniversary running of the McGarry Trophy on Sunday Oct 19th. Its was the second attempt to stage this year's competition as we had to abandon the original date due to persistant rain on Sunday Sept 14th, the weather did its best to cancel Sunday's running of the tournament with severe weather forecast predicted for Sunday that didn’t quiet materialize, instead of the heavy rain that was forecast we got strong wind and misty rain that made playing unpleasant but playable. The tough conditions made scoring difficult with only Johnny Moffatt breaking par and as a result winning the competition with 69 and in the process handed Noel McDermott the Golfer of the Year trophy, Noel also took Gross on Sunday with 81. The categories went to Albert Hogg, Jimmy Connellan and Denis Flynn. Colm Griffin picked up second place and 3rd prize went to Ben Morrissey. The past Captain’s prize was claimed by Aiden Sheerin, the longest drive went to Fiachra Neary and nearest the pin to Donal Hanly. The Captain and Men's Committee would again like to thank most sincerely Marie, David and the McGarry Family for their continued support and most generous sponsorship of The McGarry Trophy.
In conjunction with The McGarry Trophy we ran the 4th National Nearest-The-Pin Competition in aid of The Irish Hospice Foundation which Donal Hanly won. Result Click photo for Presentation of Prizes
Bracken's tee time change reaps dividend
Hugh Bracken claimed his maiden victory on Sunday September 28th last with a fantastic score of 43 points, normally an early starter on Sunday mornings Hugh decided to play at a more sociable hour, so he could enjoy the few pints Saturday night, a lie-in and breakfast in bed Sunday morning with a lunch time start might change his luck and so it proved, covering the Front 9 in 19 points he came home with 24 to record his maiden triumph. Albert Hogg claimed 2nd place with 42 points, only 3 over, 3rd place went to John Kelly also with 42pts, oh but for the 2 scratches John on the back 9. Johnny Martin picked up Gross and the Categories went to Matt Farrell, Daniel Egan and John Crowe, while the 9's were claimed by Leo Kavanagh Front & Pat Conlisk Back. Result:

Injured ....! Roche shoots 61 to claim Glancy's Super Valu Hamper
Great saying in Golf, "beware of the injured Golfer" well Paul Roche proved without doubt on Sunday Sept 21 how true that is, he complained before his round of an injured knee and then proceeded to shoot 61 to claim The Glancy's Super Valu sponsored Hamper, he also jumped 8 places on the GOY table to joint 2nd with Keith Duignan on 24 points, 7 points behind Noel McDermott who picked up 8 points courtesy of a 65 (gross 72) John Crowe was 2nd with 64, Eamonn McGirl was 3rd on 65, the categories went to David McDermott, Tom Beirne and Mickey Foley while the 9’s went to Joey Casey Front and John McCarthy Back. Bearna progress to Connacht Final
Our Inter Club season ended in dramatic fashion on Mon last Sept 15th against Bearna in the Connacht Shield semi final. With 3 matches at home and having good home form in previous rounds we were favorites to make the final, getting the perfect start with David McDermott & Jack Sharkey winning the first match 7/6, the second match with Ciaran Smith & Gordon Kavanagh was a tighter contest but our lads hung on for narrow win 1up, away in Bearna Albert Hogg & Tommy Mulvey were beaten as were Noel & Shane Sharkey which left the last match at home to decide the tie, with 4 holes to play Noel McDermott & Sean Bohan were 2 down, a par on 15 left 1 down and 3 to play, 16 & 17 were halved, so the game and match hung on the last hole where both teams had poor drives, Carrick were first to play to the green where McDermott hit it to 10ft, Bearna got inside him but Bohans solid putt for par found the back of the cup which shrunk the hole some what on Flynn of Bearna and he duly missed to send the tie into extra holes. At this stage it was almost dark when both teams tee'd off, unfortunately for us our ball was lost and we had to go back to the tee where we pared our 2nd ball for 6 but Bearna made 5 and claimed the game and place in final against Swinford who beat Castlerea in the other semi final.

Duignan claims his 10/1 ...! maiden victory in Arigna Fuels
Keith Duignan claimed his first win with a great score of 65 in The Arigna Fuels Sponsored GOY stroke on Sun Aug 10th despite the fact that he ran up a 10 on the par three 13th hole, having being only 3 over after 9 holes he covered the back 9 in 11 over with 7 of those's shots coming at the 13th, the infamous par 3 of 168m, but he showed tremendous spirit from that disaster to cover the closing 5 holes in 2 over to pip Noel Sharkey who had an equally great score of 66 (gross 73) . After all the postponements, delayed rounds due to snow, frost & fog, etc, we finally got the Spring League final played on Sunday March 9th and for a change in Spring weather conditions. 48 players teed off @ 10am in a shotgun start, with the top qualifiers occupying the first tee and the lowest qualifiers out on the 7th & 14th. Despite the fine sunny day, conditions were tough with a strong wind and a heavy turf due to the weeks rain and also a small change in format from the qualifying rounds, much to the displeasure to some of the participants, scoring was good with two 64’s occupying 1st & 2nd place. The best 64 coming from Des Beirne & Stephen Morgan, who beat Padraig O Dowd & Niall McGreevy on the Back 9. In 3rd place Tom Crowe & John Glancy with 65. The front 9 prize went to Noel McDermott & John Crowe and the back 9 to leading qualifiers Noel Sharkey & William Carson.
